Creating a Calm Vet Med Clinic for Your Mental Health
Veterinary medicine is a career built on compassion, precision, and a fair amount of controlled chaos. But when the “controlled” part starts slipping, so does our mental well-being. Long hours, emotional cases, and unrealistic client expectations can leave you feeling overwhelmed, no matter how much you love your work. Learning to reduce chaos in your day-to-day life isn't just helpful—it’s essential.
Without a healthy you, your practice cannot thrive. So here are some practical, field-tested tips from our VetBadger crew to help restore order to your clinic, boost your efficiency, and protect your mental health.
1. Get the Team on the Same Page Each Day
Spend a few minutes meeting with your staff to let everyone review the schedule and flag tricky cases. These brief daily check-ins help reduce surprises and avoid confusion or misunderstandings once the tasks are coming at you fast and furious.
2. Utilize the Tools at Your Disposal
As a veterinary clinic owner, you’ve likely invested in tools for scheduling, client communication, invoicing, and more. Perhaps you’ve even found one tool to do it all!
Be sure to take advantage of all the tools you have, or all the features of your practice management software that apply to your clinic. Utilizing options such as automated appointment reminders, voicemail transcription, and preset exam workflows helps control chaos and promote calmness for the whole practice.
3. Trust Your Crew
If you have a team in your practice, let them shine! Assuming you’ve trained them to your procedures and protocols and have clearly outlined roles and responsibilities, you don’t need to do all the things. Your practice management platform will also help with this by giving your team autonomy and clarity as they do their assigned tasks.
For solo practitioners, consider hiring outsourced help for roles such as bookkeeping and marketing. The right contractors can quickly become trusted teammates, even if they aren’t technically on the payroll.
4. Be Ok with Not Being Right for Everyone
Folks in veterinary medicine have a high rate of burnout. In an already understaffed field, we need to avoid burnout as much as possible. One crucial step that can feel counterintuitive when trying to build a profitable business is to say “no” to clients who aren’t the right fit.
Your practice cannot, should not, and will not be able to serve everyone who calls or walks in the door. If you have a client who is repeatedly difficult to navigate, it’s ok to let them go.
One of the best ways to protect your mental health and keep chaos at bay is to remember that the customer is not always right. Clients who routinely arrive late, treat your team poorly, or demand special treatment don’t need to stay. You can firmly and politely disconnect yourself.
5. Create a “Mental Reset” Routine
There is no way to sugarcoat the fact that you have a high-stress job. Your brain needs time to decompress.
In addition to scheduling bigger chunks of time away from your practice, try building in short “reset rituals” during the day. A quiet walk around the block, a few deep breaths with a cup of tea, or even five minutes in a break room with your phone off can give your brain some space and time to return to a state of calm, rather than chaos.
Bring Back the Calm
Chaos may be part of veterinary medicine, but burnout doesn't have to be. By taking intentional steps to create a sense of calm orderliness, you’ll be ready to enjoy a sustainable, thriving career that supports your whole person and the people who work with you.
